Imagine being able to check into your hotel with facial recognition tech, much in the same way as you open your iPhone X?

Well, you won’t have long to wait until this is a daily reality for travellers, as Marriott is currently trialling its own facial-recognition check-in services for guests at selected hotels in China.

Marriott has teamed up with Alibaba’s travel service platform Fliggy to introduce the technology which kicked off last month at Hangzhou Marriott Hotel Quianjiang and Sanya Marriott Hotel Dadonghai Bay.

The hotel chain has also issued this press release which claims they plan to roll out the service across all Marriott properties soon.

“According to market research results by consulting firm Ipsos, Chinese travellers have shown a strong interest in new technologies in hotels with over 60 per cent showing their preference for facial recognition technology,” chief sales and marketing officer for Aisa Pacific at Marriott told Travel Weekly.

The intelligent check-in device at the hotel simply dispenses the guest’s room key cards after his or her identity and booking information is verified.

All of which means no more standing in boring old queues at hotels after a killer long-haul flight. Win win!
